This section provides answers to all kinds of questions
regarding domain names, for instance what is involved in
hosting your existing domain name on our servers, how to
transfer it, how to avoid downtime and many more
questions.
- What is a domain name?
- A domain name is your own unique web site address also mistakenly referred
to as a URL (Universal Resource Locator). It can be anything that you want, so long as that web site address is unique
and thus available.
Currently you see many domain names (web site addresses) that end in .com, .net, .gov and .org but there are many new domain name suffixes that are
emerging such as:
.biz for businesses
.name for individuals
.pro for professionals
.museum for museums
.coop for business cooperatives
.areo for the aviation industry
and many others.
-
Two letter domains such as .ca, .jp, .de, .cc, .tv and many more are country code top level
domains (TLDs). The domains correspond to a specific geographic location, territory or country. Rules for their use vary greatly and some may only be used by citizens of the respective country etc.
- What is a URL (Universal Resource Locator)?
- A domain name is your own unique web site address such as
ez123hosting.com. A URL is computer specific like a web server for this
domain like www.ez123hosting.com, ftp1.ez123hosting.com or
mail.ez123hosting.com.
- How much does it cost to have a domain name?
- The cost for a domain name varies depending on the TLD (Top Level Domain) you select i.e. .com, .net, .ca etc. However, the cost of a domain name is affordable for even the smallest of businesses starting at $19.95/year.
- ez123hosting's retail price for a .com, .net and .org is $19.95/year. Check our main domain name registration pages for the cost of other TLDs we sell as they are more volatile price wise and change often.
- What exactly is a subdomain or sub domain?
-
While a domain name is a full website address, totally independent
of other domain names, a subdomain depends on a domain name.
If for example "yourdomain.com" is your domain name, then
http://yourdomain.com and http://www.yourdomain.com would be your
domain name addresses.
A subdomain name would be a "specific name under your domain
name", something like "subdomain.yourdomain.com".
It's address would then be:
http://subdomain.yourdomain.com
-
- What exactly is a subdirectory?
-
While a domain name is a full website address, totally independent
of other domain names, a subdirectory is simply a directory with a domain.
If for example "yourISP.com" is a domain name, then
http://yourISP.com and http://www.yourISP.com would be the
corresponding domain name addresses.
A subdirectory name would be a "specific directory under the domain
name", something like "www.yourISP.com/mycompany".
It's address would then be:
http://www.yourISP.com/mycompany
- Should I have a domain name for my web address or use a subdomain or
subdirectory of my ISP?
We highly recommend that you get a domain name. Without a domain name, your web site address will be connected to someone else's domain name which
means a large portion of your promotional efforts will be spent advertising
someone else.
Starting off with your own domain name offers one of your best
return on investments of any activity on the web. Also changing your web site address at a later date can be a costly and time consuming project. This includes re-promoting your site on-line and off-line, reprinting your business cards/promotional materials,
vehicle logos and much more.
Another important point is the fact that a effective domain name is easier for people to remember!
Get your own domain name
its well worth it!
- I already host my existing domain name with another hosting
company. How difficult is it to move over to ez123hosting?
- Transferring
your website or domain name is normally a very easy
process. All you have to do is to submit an order for a
hosting account from one of our packages.
Once we have created your hosting account we will send you full
instructions on how you can transfer your domain name depending on
who your existing registrar is. If these
instructions are too complicated/difficult for you to carry out yourself. We will then transfer the domain name
for you for no additional charge if technically possible.
- Is there any additional charge for hosting my existing domain name?
- Of course there is no additional charge associated with hosting
your existing domain name on our servers. All fees are
included with the hosting account except the domain name renewal
where it is not part of the hosting plan.
- I do not have a domain name yet? Do I register my new domain
name or sign up for hosting first?
- The choice is really up to you we will bill you appropriately in
all cases. If you supply us with your domain name and we note it is
already registered to you; we'll let you know how to transfer it. If
your domain name is included with your hosting package you will not
have your credit card billed for the domain name registration.
-
- Also if you sign up for hosting without providing us a domain name
because we don't have one yet. We'll contact you to either register
one for you or get the details from you directly.
-
- However you proceed, feel comfortable knowing that we will bill
you appropriately in the end and we will have your site up with as
little effort for you as possible. That's our guarantee!
- Do you automatically register the free domain name that
I receive when I host with either Enterprise Plan?
- The registration of additional domains with the Enterprise plans
is included. Both plans include ONE free domain
registration. If you do not use this free domain registration with
your order, you can still use it with an additional domain name
later on.
- What kind of domains can I host? My domain is not a .COM, .NET
or .ORG domain.
- We can host any and all TLD domains. Of course we can
host the popular COM, NET, ORG and EDU domains, but we also support
all new domains such as .INFO and .BIZ. In addition to that, you can
host any other country domain name such as .CA, .CO.UK, .AT, .DE or any
other domain name that is available.
- When I transfer my domain names will I have downtime with my website and emails.
-
Most importantly is that you do NOT notify your current hosting
company as the first step.
You need a hosting account with ez123hosting. You can order a
hosting account by submitting an order with our ordering
forms for one of our packages.
After your account has been setup, you can upload your files and
create your email accounts.
Now you can go ahead and request a domain transfer with your
domain registrar. Point the domain name to our nameservers (we can
help you with that) and wait until the changes have propagated.
About 24 to 48 hours later, your domain should be pointing to
your new hosting account with ez123hosting
and your website as well
as emails should still be up and running without any problems or
outage in service.
Let a few days pass to make sure your domain points to
your new ez123hosting
account on all nameservers worldwide. You can then cancel your old hosting account with your old hosting company
and the transfer will be transparent to everyone.
